Siesta Key is a 8.5-mile-long barrier island just south of Sarasota draws raves for its cool, white sand beaches, which consist of quartz crystal and won't burn your tootsies on hot days. (Word is out, so expect crowds on the public beaches.) Siesta Key Village at the north end is more commercial, while Crescent Beach (this lodging's locale) is more reserved. Bike, kayak and boat rentals are within walking distance.

SIESTA KEY DRUM CIRCLE Siesta Beach, Siesta Key, Sarasota (simplysarasota.com/drumcircle.html). For about an hour before sunset every Sunday, you can shake, rattle and roll with some talented drummers and dancers. This informal, noncommercial event has been a draw for both tourists and locals for years and is a must for any first-time visitors to the Key.
